Embassy of the Netherlands: The Forgotten Battle Series
Client: Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands | Category: Video Production, Event Photography | Industry: Diplomatic, Education, Heritage
The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Canada partnered with Beechwood Cemetery Foundation to launch the Forgotten Battle Series, a groundbreaking educational initiative commemorating pivotal moments in Canadian military history. The inaugural event focused on the Battle of the Scheldt—a defining moment in World War II that forged an enduring friendship between Canada and the Netherlands.
PROJECT BRIEF
-
The Embassy needed comprehensive video and photography coverage of a full-day commemorative event on October 17, 2023, at Beechwood National Memorial Centre. The event featured separate educational programs for grade 7-8 students, grade 10-11 students, and an evening program for adults—all centered around artifacts from the Liberation Museum Zeeland (displayed in Ottawa for the first time). The content would serve multiple purposes: commemorate 80 years of liberation, provide shareable assets for future events, support social media engagement, and preserve the legacy of Canadian sacrifice during the Battle of the Scheldt.
-
We provided full-day professional video and photography coverage capturing the gravity and educational impact of this historic event: ▸ Multi-generational programming coverage documenting student engagement with WWII artifacts, educational presentations, and interactive activities including the symbolic tulip painting tribute to Canadian veterans
▸ Ceremonial documentation capturing the evening adult program featuring artifacts from Bevrijdingsmuseum Zeeland and expert presentations on Canadian military history
▸ Artifact showcase photography highlighting rare WWII items transformed into art, toys, and tools after the Battle of the Scheldt
▸ Atmospheric event coverage of the Beechwood National Memorial Centre and the respectful, educational environment
▸ Commemorative video production creating a legacy piece capturing the essence of the day for future educational use and social media distribution -
The professional video and photography delivered a comprehensive visual archive of this landmark educational event, successfully capturing the solemnity and significance of honoring the 12,873 Allied casualties (half Canadian) from the Battle of the Scheldt. The content now serves as a powerful educational resource, social media asset, and commemorative piece for the Embassy's ongoing relationship-building between Canada and the Netherlands. The visuals effectively convey the multi-generational impact of teaching this "forgotten battle" to new audiences, ensuring the sacrifices of the First Canadian Army in liberating the Netherlands are never forgotten.
